Leaving Effective Feedback & Reviews

Learn how to write helpful reviews that support mentors and help other mentees make informed decisions.

Why Reviews Matter

Your reviews have a direct impact on three key areas:

Help Mentors Improve

Constructive feedback helps mentors understand what's working and what needs adjustment.

Guide Other Mentees

Your detailed review helps others decide if a mentor is the right fit for their goals.

Build Platform Quality

Honest reviews maintain high standards and help the platform connect the right mentors with the right mentees.

What to Include in Your Review

1. Specific Examples

Share concrete moments or advice that made a difference. Avoid vague statements.

Good:

"Sarah helped me rewrite my portfolio project description, which led to 3 interview callbacks in two weeks."

Too Vague:

"Sarah was helpful with my portfolio."

2. Communication Style

Describe how the mentor communicated. Were they clear? Supportive? Direct? This helps others understand if the style fits their preferences.

3. Session Structure

Explain how sessions were organized. Did they have a clear agenda? Were they prepared? Did they provide actionable next steps?

4. Responsiveness

Mention how quickly they responded to messages and how available they were between sessions.

5. Results & Progress

Share measurable outcomes when possible: skills learned, goals achieved, projects completed, or career milestones reached.

Understanding the Rating Scale

5 Stars - Outstanding

Exceeded expectations significantly. Provided exceptional value, insights, and support. You achieved or exceeded your goals.

4 Stars - Very Good

Met expectations with high-quality mentorship. Made meaningful progress toward your goals with helpful guidance.

3 Stars - Good

Solid mentorship with some useful advice, but room for improvement in preparation, depth, or communication.

2 Stars - Below Expectations

Sessions lacked depth or preparation. Limited progress toward goals. Communication issues affected the experience.

1 Star - Unsatisfactory

Mentor was unprepared, unresponsive, or provided advice that didn't align with your goals. Sessions provided little to no value.

For Low Ratings (1-2 Stars)

Be specific about what went wrong and why you're rating low. This helps both the mentor improve and validates your concerns to other users.

Consider contacting support if you experienced policy violations or concerning behavior.

When to Leave a Review

After Your First Session

You can leave an initial review, but note that your perspective will be limited to just one interaction.

After Multiple Sessions (Recommended)

The best reviews come after 3-5 sessions when you've seen consistent patterns and made measurable progress.

Update Your Review

You can update your review as your mentorship evolves. If your experience significantly changes (better or worse), edit your review to reflect it.

Pro Tip: Review Soon After Sessions

Write your review within a few days while details are fresh. Keep notes during your mentorship to reference specific examples when writing your review.

Example Reviews

Helpful Review

"Marcus was incredibly helpful over our 4 sessions. He reviewed my React code and identified performance issues I hadn't considered (specifically unnecessary re-renders). He shared his screen to show me how to use React DevTools profiler, which I now use regularly. His communication was clear and he always followed up on his promises to send resources. Within a month, I felt confident enough to apply for senior positions. Highly recommend for anyone working on React performance optimization."

Why it's helpful: Specific examples, measurable outcomes, describes communication style, helps others understand the mentor's strengths.

Unhelpful Review

"Marcus was good. Learned some stuff."

Why it's unhelpful: Too vague, no specific examples, doesn't explain what was learned or the communication style.
